I am looking to add an in car radio and wondered what you guys thought. Rugged Radios told me UHF would work better through the trees and places like windrock. What are you guys using and how good do they work. I am looking at the VX2200 with a quarter wave antenna. It would be cool if we could communicate from the campground to people on the mountain, is that possible? We have all used those cheap hand helds and they basically don't work if you can't see the other person.

It needs to be GMRS (general mobile radio service) or it will not pick up with other two way radios. 431114

Most of us use the radios (Motorola) from Mason (on this site). He has a radio guy who boosts them to up to 50 watts and programs them to the GMRS channels. We talk from the campground to most of the trails. I have talked to some that were over an hours ride away, so I could predict where to hook up with them. Mason's come with new antenna's and wiring too.

We use VHF and they do not reach out like you would think they would. Flat area they are very powerful, but in the hills they really are not the great.
