SuperATV +6 Front Upper Arms Empty
PostSubject: SuperATV +6 Front Upper Arms   SuperATV +6 Front Upper Arms EmptyTue Aug 23, 2011 1:48 am

Well, I did one to many Austin Power's in the woods and got pissed off one to many times. The lose of steering radius was horrible with the SuperATV +6 Steel LT system. The calipers and hub/bearing holder would hit the arm and you would loose almost half of your steering movement. So I made my own upper arms. The welding is not pro, but I am getting better. MIG's just do not do a good job with core wire. I also had issues with the shocks trying to punch through the thin plate they used for the lower shock mount. I fixed that by almost tripling the thickness.

Going to drill the holes for the shock mounts, install them, and setup the alignment. Hopefully, I will get that done by Wed and take it for a spin in the pasture. If everything goes good I will then take her on a trail ride close to home. Hell, I just hope to get most of my steering back.

Here is the materials list.

8'x1.25"x.120" Seamless DOM tubing
4'x6"x3/16" Steel Plate
4 5/8"-18 HEIM Joints from Kar Tek Off-Road (two per arm) JMX version
2 3/4"-16 HEIM Joints from Kar Tek Off-Road (one per arm) JMX version

Took SuperATV arms to local race car shop and had him do the bends for me (cheaper then purchasing a bender). Front tube is bent at 21 degrees and the rear tube is bent at 17 degrees. I reused the 5/8" and 3/4" inserts from the old arms and inserted 3"x1"x.120" inside the 1.25" tubing to brace them. The 3/4" I just notched the tubing to get them to fit at the weird angle the old ones had. The alignment was kind of a nightmare to complete. I spent all day Saturday building a jig to get everything to line up. I will have to get a picture of it assembled with the old arms for you to get a picture of the mess.

Just FYI, I noticed that both arms are mirrors of each other. I figured that my jig would work great for both! Boy was I wrong. The builders of the purchased kit must have been smoking their lunch that day. The 3/4" HEIM was 3 degrees difference in tilted angle and one of the arms had the 5/8" HEIM insert welded in cockeyed. We shall see if they fit or if more mods are on the way.

I have heard some people were not happy with super ATV suspension.
I think Jerry has it on his RZR. I think he is happy with it.. 431114

I mix and match stuff. I have had no problems with superatv S conversion a arms and their rhino brand axles (Much better axles and cv joints than stock or gorrilla)... When I think off suspension- no doubt shocks are the key component and I have Zbros racing exit shocks--which are awesome.

All and all I have had great luck with superatv and this is comming from a guy that can tear up a steel ball with a rubber hammer..No complaints about superatv here 431114

I agree, most of the stuff I get from them is great. The crap they did back in march when they only sent me upper arms twice put me in limbo with them. The steering wheel I got from them bends when you jump and this problem I had with my turning almost drove me over the edge.

I also mix and match my crap. Racer Tech is my #1 go to company, but I could not see dumping $5k in a suspension and still needing other stuff. If I had it to do over I would have parted out my RZR and purchased a 900. Still may next year.

Got them mounted now. Man look at the clearance from the steering rod, that is sweet!

Worked out great. Took it for a 80 mile ride Friday night and suspension did great, but I blown another Bighorn. The quality on those suckers just is not what it was with my first pair. I purchased two fronts and three rears. The fronts are all that are left. Time to find a different tire.

Well, found some new issues with Super ATV setup. Found lower front bolts on the rear control arms to be sheared. The aluminum high-alignment spacers on all the 5/8 heims, will just not hold up. I am tracking down SS spacers and will swap them out.

As you can see I installed SS inserts a few years ago, when i added gussets to the frame, to stop bolt shear.

An update on my Super ATV +6 kit. For the third time I have egg shaped the stepped washers they use for the HEIM joints. It is happening in the front and the rear. The first two sets were aluminum washers and they did not last long at all. The last set of washers they sent me were steel and the seemed to last way longer. But, they still egg shaped. I gave up yesterday when I found the washer problem again and ordered the S conversion kit. Only needed the axle shafts sine the Rhino axles Super ATV sells seem to be some of the best CV/Axles on the market.

Not sure if I will sell the +6 steel arm kit I have, but may not have a reason to keep them except for backup parts. I am keeping the Phantom shocks though. They told me that the spring rating was the only thing different with their +5/+6 shocks. I like them, so I am keeping them.

Finally I will no longer have to keep the HEIM joints lubed to keep squeaks and stif steering from driving you nuts.
