Well, I finally came back but didn't think I would. What changed my mind? I made it 1450 miles and the belt blew. I first though that wasn't a problem since I carry a spare. Well, it wouldn't be a problem except that I have installed a secondary battery in the compartment under the seat. You have to remove that section of plastic to change the belt. That is a hassle, but can be done. What can't be done is getting the belt cover off without removing the skid plate.madz madz madz  At least I had some help. We cut a section of tree, tipped it up on it's side and propped it up to make the skid plate easier to get to. Needless to say, that would be hard to do without a few people. I bought some Richochet skids to put back on it. They have a couple of slots so you can get to 3 of the 5 bottom bolts without removing the plate. When the belt blew there were threads of the belt stuck on the back side of the secondary that wouldn't come out. I had to remove the secondary when I got home to get the threads out. I looked up the torque specs on the secondary bolt when I put it back together and even went 1# over. The bolt backed out at around 15 miles. I had to lay in the mud to get the lower bolts out of the belt cover. We spent about an hour trying to get the cover off as the secondary spring was pushing the clutch cover against the front exhaust pipe and wouldn't let it come up. We finally pushed the secondary back on enough to the the cover off. That was about the time I remember replacing the belt on my old XP. It took about 15min and I didn't have to lay on my back in the mud.

ANYWAY......the good and the bad.

The good, the XP has a ton more power. It has a LOT better brakes. It has a LOT easier steering. It rides smoother. It has a LOT more wheel travel. It has more ground clearance. There is enough room under the dash to install a heater. It has a 3 terminal wiring strip under the hood. The ground and accessory power is already wired up. There is an empty terminal for battery power. I ran a spare power cable for a winch to mine so I will have pleanty of current capability. The front grill will come off by pushing down on a couple of tabs for EASY access to clean the radiator. The entire dash cluster, speedo, ignition switch, headlight switch, 4X4 switch, all come off together simply by removing two screws. No more laying in the floor board to get to them. It has a NICE BIG battery, no need for a secondary. I didn't stay in the gas very much at all but we still held a decient pace. I put 101 miles on it and still had 2 bars of gas left. I had no issues with the glove box, mine stayed shut. I put it in low range once just to see what it was like. I don't see having to use it much.

The bad, engine braking is still a POS! No where in the ball park of the Maverick. The two parts of the roll cage that they strapped the shock resivors to take up a lot of space. I am having a box made for the back, 19" wide, 19" tall and 25" long. It will have a divider and serve as dry storage and cooler. It is still going to be hard to carry everything, chain saw and extra gas. I jacked mine up in the front when I installed the heater so I didn't loose much coolant at all but I still wanted to bleed the air, if any, out of the engine after it warmed up. There is a small removable cover between the seats on the back pannel. The bleed screw is at about 11 o'clock at the drivers side exhaust pipe. You can just see part of it through the hole. I never was able to get a wrench on it to loosen it. The motor ran pleanty cool so I assume it didn't need to be bled but just be aware it is a PAIN IN THE A$$ to get to. Oh, and the seats are better in the Maverick. The sides of the XP seats are WAY TOO SOFT! They don't hold you in like the Maverick's do. I am still not 100% sold on the 14" wheels.

They may have changed more but the only thing I know of they changed much was they installed the QE quick engagement front diff. As long as you have to remove the skid plate to change a belt I think I will stay with the Poo Poos, at least for now.

I never owned a canned ham so i couldnt compare to that, but compared to an 800 or 900 the 1000 is a good step above, the ride is the best ive ever been in, and the power is unreal..i mounted my heater just under the top dash so you dont see it, just feel the warm heat coming down under the dash....hows your glovebox door?

Its good to have someone that has also rode in the canam because I was really liking that ride I had in one. Guess I just need to go get one myself now.

I loved the motor and the engine breaking and not having to replace bearings/bushings all the time. But when I was laying on my back in the mud with water running down the back of my neck and down the back of my pants I pretty much made up my mind right then, THIS SHIT IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!

You will be impressed with the extra power, better suspension, easier steering and the things they did to make things easier like the power terminal strip, removable grill, removable dash, better charging system and bigger battery over the 900.

Ritchie in Athens had the best price except for Abernathy's. They were about $400 higher but I didn't want to make a 10+ hour drive for it.

Yea that would suck for sure just to change a belt. The last I checked Ritche was around $800 to $1000 higher than Abernathny and Pro X in Etowah. What did you get yours for before taxes?

I think you meant Ooltawah. I didn't even check with them, I forgot about them being open. Seems to me like it was $18,880 or pretty close to that before tax.

How's the glove box door fit and operation? Did you notice the front shocks banging noise at full extension?

Glove box door stayed shut and I even had a bunch of stuff in it. It worked fine for me.

I did hear the front shocks a few times. I also heard it backfire several times when I would let off the gas.

One other thing, I know it will take some getting used to the difference between the machines but the 1000 doesn't handle like the Maverick or the 900 for that matter. It seems to have quite a bit of body roll. I am not sure if adjusting the shocks will fix it or not. I am thinking I may have to send them off and probably end up with different springs along with valveing. It also seems to push more in the turns than the Maverick or the 900. You can gas it and break the tires loose and it helps quite a bit but just be aware it does push a little more.

I have heard it does have alot of body roll from other people and on the forums, I would think that would have more to do with your spring rate or the pre load on them.

I put 101 miles on mine last Friday then about 55 more on Saturday. I didn't drive it too hard. What is worring me is that a BUNCH of guys on the west coast blew belts with just about the mileage as I have now. Most seem to be 4 seaters that have been loaded down. The vendors at the riding areas out there sold out of belts this past weekend from what I understand. When I left the dealership with the XP I also left with 2 ball joints, brakepads and a belt. I ordered another spare belt from Wasteland that is supposed to be stronger than the Polaris belt. I am ordering a belt cover temperature gauge from Alba today so I can keep an eye on the temps. From what I read the belts are coming apart due to heat. The belt is the same on the 900 and 1000.

Yes and the 1000 has that funky little spring on top. I hear some shock builders are doing away with it and running a true dual spring set up.

Not yet, I am taking it a little easy on it for a little while longer. I have gassed it a little bit but didn't hold it there long. The real test will come after the first oil change.cheers

I've been buying the Gates Carbon belts & Scotts been running one on his 1000 with great results. I'm getting them from O'Reilly's for 84.00 (wholesale) & they seem to hold up quite well.
