PostSubject: Axle sheared off in the diff   Sun Nov 23, 2014 9:12 pm

Had a little issue yesterday riding, the front axle sheared off in the front diff.
To get out of the woods I made a hammock of a thing out of bungee cords to hold the axle up.
To remove the broken spline I was able to drill and tap it 1/4-20 and screw a bolt in it. On the drilling and tapping I had to engauge the 4wd so the output on that side would not spin while drilling and tapping.
I didnt have a slide hammer at the time to I used a pair of vice grips on the bolt and tapped it with a hammer and it came rite out.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]" />[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]" />

I have seen several on fb pages that have done the same thing. These were not stock axles, they were Rhinos. Just one of them situations where I was pushing it a bit too hard.

Yea I was trying a little too hard for sure, I heard it and honestly though it was the diff slipping, it will do that in a bind. I think it did slip but then grabbed and shock loaded the axle. If I can slow down on replacing parts I am going to try and buy a new diff and have it blue printed by a company I found that claims to tighten up all the tolerances and helps to prevent the diff slip.

Ya , but with out any Diff slip , you might just break shit faster.
Remember in a bind , something has got to give. I would much rather break an Axel.
Than a ring and pinion... 431114

Problem is its not made to slip, its doing damage inside the diff every time it slips.

The good news is that there is a fix for diff slip. No more H clips and different diff hubs.. And still an open diff. No need to weld the hubs as some have done in the past.  cheers

Before long, You won't hear mine slipping anymore. If anything it will just explode.

If he had called me, he wouldn't have had to waste all of that time of drilling and tapping. Happened to a buddy of mine and I just welded a bolt to it and used my slide hammer. I would say in under 5minutes.
